LONDON PART ONE

A quick trip to London and a few stops to some iconic spots whilst admiring iconic work, firstly the V&A museum to browse ‘NAOMI IN FASHION’- a exhibition based on iconic supermodel following her four-decade career as well as her life pre and post fame supported by BOSS!

It began explaining how NAOMI was scouted as a teenager in Covent Garden, during the time she was attending Stage school. The agent who scouted hers was named Beth Boldt and according to the exhibition Naomi’s mother wasn’t into the idea at all, instead she had hoped her daughter would stay in school and finish her exams.

As the exhibition continued we learnt that Naomi was booked to fly to her first big shoot abroad with ‘British Elle’, following that on arrival back to London Naomi was courted by American agents- she got her first call to Paris at 16 and her Aunt Jane came along with her for her first time but not shortly after that she was headed there weeks at a time for booking by French Elle.

Her career soared and she was walking thousands of shows and fashions weeks. She was very well liked by not only designers but musicians too, and made multiple appearances grooving in her early years in music videos for Bob Marley and more pre being scouted, similarly during the height of her career she was featured in ‘Whams’ music videos too. In August 1988, she was the first black woman to be shot for the cover of Vogue France. The ultimate Muse! Noteably her longstanding collaborative relationships with brands including Azzendine Alaia, Jean Paul Gaultier and Karl Largerfeld.

THE SPOTLIGHT

We saw an extensive archive of all sorts of fabulous outfits worn throughout Naomi’s thrilling career, including the fab ‘DOLCE AND GABBANA’ gown worn on her last day of community service. Campbell admitted that with the fame came intense pressure and media scrutiny. In 2007 Campbell completed five days of court-ordered community service for throwing her phone at an employee, the press covered it a great deal so in response to the attention she wore this breath taking gown. Very iconic!

A statement regrading this situation read: “When i did my community service, the paparazzi were there from the first day, it was as if i was doing a runway show. So, when the last day came i decided i wanted to walk out and leave with my head held high. I chose to wear this”

PRESENT

After a trip down memory lane and a dip into the archive the exhibition ended with some recent looks worn by Campbell including her a classic trench dress by Burberry worn to Queen Elizabeth’s platinum jubilee and another Burberry Covid look featuring a hazmat suit as well as a mask.

FINALLY….

Overall i would recommend a visit to any musers who live in London or are planning a trip there before Sunday 6 April 2025, it costs £18 per person and takes approximately 45 minutes depending on the pace you take. The exhibition as mentioned is located in the V&A museum South Kensington, Cromwell Road, London, SW7 2RL.
